Transgender students have voted to try and block police from attending Pride events – branding them racist, classist & transphobic.

We are now looking at a global awakening. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are “waking up” or coming to realise not everything is coming up roses and the Police are NOT always on our side. Police services around the world are being called out for their actions towards ethnic minorities, lgbtq individuals and lower income people; and with reason!

PINK NEWS – A battle on the issue took place at the National Union of Students transgender conference last week.

Students voted to pass the motion  ‘No Pride in the Police’, submitted by University of Manchester Students Union.

The motion vowed to “support and organise actions against police presence at Prides” because “many trans people have faced mistreatment and violence at the hands of the police”.

It resolved “to encourage Prides to not have a police presence as part of parades, especially Pride events organised by students unions”.

The motion explained: “The police disproportionately target trans people, along with sex workers, working class communities and communities of colour for policing, leading to an increase in those groups in the prison population.”

A further motion approved by the conference backed the “abolition of prisons” – apparently calling for all prisoners in the UK to be freed and released into the community.

In recent days calls have been made against the Vancouver Police Department, citizens urging other citizens to open their eyes to what is going on with disproportionate police action and the lack of follow up or governance of such behaviours.

The tensions between the Toronto Police Service, PrideToronto Organization, the Community and the group calling itself Black Lives Matter, have continued to grow. Toronto Police saying they will not take part in Pride 2017. Other police services from other Canadian Municipalities pulling out their involvement.

Toronto Police continuing their sting operation in Marie Curtis Park and no one seems bothered any more because it isn’t >new< news. No one is talking about the cop that used HIV fear & stigma as a weapon and no one is talking about the numerous posting on individual Facebook Timelines where people describe their uncomfortable homophobic encounters with the police.

Gay Vets had to go through a battle to be allowed to march in this years St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a story we discuss this week on THE VOICE OF TURNIPSTYLE.

Los Angeles Pride has officially announced that this year’s Pride Parade has been cancelled and will be replaced with a protest.

Remember the days when they were a protest. I do. I keep saying it and I will still say it, “just because the laws protect us it doesn’t mean everybody thinks the way we do!”

Maybe it is time we stop fucking partying and start protesting again and demand our equality across the board and stop being placating with a false sense of security and acceptance.
