Young gay men of colour find PrEP acceptable, but struggle with adherence

BETA BLOG – This week Beta released the findings of a really interesting study about young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Young men who identified as having recent high risk sex were involved in the study. Approxamtely 66% identified as Latino and 25% identified as Black, and the study has discovered that of these young men that were involved it would appear that they are happy to jump on the program but lost interest over time.

Study participants reported missing doses for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons were that they “simply forgot,” were “away from home”, or were “too busy with other things.”

I too realize that life gets hectic or something takes you longer than you expected and your meds can slip your mind. My experience over the past 7 years with my chronic heart condition, a result of an undiagnosed defect, has brought me to relying on taking 15 pills a day to keep going. That used to be 21 pills a day. I do not take an extra dose of all my pills (15 per day) with me every where I go.

I can feel the affects of not taking my meds on a regular schedule. Sometimes within even hours of missing my “regular time” I can tell that I have missed my dose and things are not quite right and that triggers me to grab my meds as soon as I can.

This is not the case with PrEP and I can understand why it would be easy to miss a dose; you don’t feel the effects of the drop of tenofovir in your system but it still happens.

PrEP, like any other health regimen requires discipline and regularity. I am excited about the article I read about a new “injectible” regime that may be on our horizon. Will have more of that when it becomes available.
