WEIGHING IN ON THE CONVERSATION

During our exclusively live broadcast of The Voice of turnipStyle Episode 118, we broached on the topic branching from the news that from this point forward in the new Star Trek movies (reboot), the character Sulu will be gay.

Sulu Star TrekThose behind the decision state that it is a nod to Gene Roddenberry and his vision of an all inclusive universe, as well as a nod to the actor George Takei, openly gay, who played the Sulu character in the Original Series (TOS).

Out of this decision has come a lot of comments like; “disappointed” and “not the vision” plus “that is not what I really said” and so on.

During our show (you really should have been there for the live broadcast, we kicked ass and it was awesome) we darted around to touch on many aspects of this discussion. Some we all have maybe heard before and some we haven’t.

There are some really important questions to ask.

The first question about the sexuality of Sulu contributing to the story line, well that is a question I hope the minds behind the movie thought about and thought about it hard and careful. I won’t be able to speak to this question until after I see the movie. I am sure I will share my thoughts with you at that time.

QUESTIONS

  1. Does Sulu’s sexuality contribute to the story line? Is his sexuality pertinent now or will it be down the road?
  2. Are we making Sulu gay just because the actor, George Takei is gay?
  3. Why not just introduce a new character and make him or her homosexual?
  4. Are we playing around with sexuality, homosexuality for that matter, because it is trendy and cool to now have a homosexual, bisexual or sexually fluid character? [See: LGBT CHARACTERS SHOULD NOT BE TRENDY]
Red Shirt

As hard as I work to avoid any expectations; I am hopeful that Sulu’s sexuality does contribute to the story line in a manner that doesn’t leave us wondering if the decision was made for publicity or just to be trendy.

Second question and the third question share a couple important discussion points. Was Sulu picked because Takei is gay. We know that answer to be yes. The decision was made to have a gay character and Sulu seemed the obvious choice. Gay actor, gay character. Brings balance. (To the force – wink)

But why not make another high profile character gay? Why not Kirk, or Scotty or McCoy? Some ask why not a brand new character?

The fear I have of creating a new character and the message that would send stems from a bit of old school “red shirt” philosophy.

FT GRUNT BOXER 2

My fears of introducing a new character that is homosexual are firstly they become known as the “gay” character. The one character that had to be made gay so that the story fit into some sort of format, some ideology without that character having any other substance or what back story there is, takes second place to them being gay.

With this being a new character they are more likely to be expendable to the story line. Hence, my comment about “red shirt philosophy.” When it becomes no longer necessary to have a gay character, poof they are gone in some transporter accident and we go back to the way things were.

Both those avenues lead me right back to the question, “are ‘we’ making characters gay just for the sake of it or because it is trendy and cool?”

DO YOU AGREE WITH THE DECISION TO MAKE SULU GAY?

I stand by the comments I have made in numerous conversations before; yes there have been other gay characters in the Star Trek universe. They have been in the books that are associated with the franchise and are actual characters that contribute to the story line. One you have even seen in a major film production. But their homosexuality has NEVER gotten this much attention.

Incidentally, he got killed off.

This conversation is flying around with regard to the Star Wars franchise after people felt that there was a spark between Poe and Finn. Talk started to emerge about a hopeful budding relationship yet no discussion was made about previous characters that were gay in the novels that were written up to this point.

I question the intention and purpose, I will keep an open mind but now hear this, my sexuality and the struggle we as a community have faced up to now and STILL continue to face and fight is not to be taken lightly.

We are not a fad.
