I hear about this behavior all the time, but fortunately I'm not exposed to it. I've worked in the service industry but never has anyone been so outrageous or disrespectful.
It probably happens a lot, unfortunately...

I work as a server at Applebee's part time. I got slammed on Thursday just when I started my shift at 4 pm. I got 12 tables of 3 to 5 people each in a 10 minute stretch. I informed the tables as they came in that I was the only server on the floor. Eventhough there are other employess in the building they are not clocked in, the were from the lunch shift. It was crazy and stressfull waiting on all these tables. People were rude and demanding and impatient. One table with two elderly people, a man and a woman, were very unhappy with me. When I went to check on them, she went off. You never came to see how we were doing, and he wanted another drink, you never ask.... She was loud and there was no reason to be so rude. I told her that I was sorry, and the I was the only person on the floor and was very busy and doing my best. She told me "I don't want to hear your excuses, you piece of shit. Just do your job."

I have never had someone that was a total stranger be so rude to me. I just told her "You are very rude." I walked away, printed their check, dropped it off at the table. There was no way that I was ever going to go back to them, I didn't care if they paid or not. All my tables heard her. They were all suddenly very nice to me. One table asked me how I could be so calm, and not responded in kind. I said that she had must have never worked with the public, and I wouldn't give any real reason to complain about me. The old lady had the nerve to go to my Manager and demand that I get fire on the spot in front of her. So, turniphed....I feel for you.
