Words Not To Use: Words of Wisdom
I had an interesting experience this week that I have been wanting to share with you but just wanted to wait a couple of days before posting it.
A gentleman was standing in queue » 01 for probably no more than 5-10 minutes with a collection of other passengers that would not total more than 7. They all showed up at once, which is not all that bizzare when a number of flights leave at the same time.
When he walked up to the counter to check in he was way past the cut-off time for checking in before a flight. He then flew off the handle and said he had been standing in line for over an hour.
Impossible. Simple as that. We had not had anybody in line or at the check in counters for the last 30 minutes » 02, hence why I was standing at the check in counter reading up on the latest internal news.
Myself and the agent made a couple of phone calls to try and accommodate his late arrival in the hopes we would be able to get him on his flight. Unfortunately, it would have just been physically impossible without incurring delays, not only for this flight but other flights as well.
We offered to put him on the next flight going out in a few hours.
I went off to tend to other stuff and things and upon my return to the counter where this gentleman was standing he looked right at me and said;
What the fuck are you looking at? Don’t fuckin’ look at my face!
I replied that I was not looking at anything in particular other than scanning the area looking to see if anyone else needed some help.
Then this following statement flew out of his mouth;
Well don’t be fucking looking at my face. You need to go and get some fucking pussy!
OK so guess who is not flying any more. DENIED. That gentleman won’t be flying with us for a while.
When this gentleman was told he would not be flying he even threatened the supervisor both verbally and with physical posturing. Um, ya about that – not such a good idea.
I understand that people get frustrated and there is a human need to articulate that frustration we all experience it.
However, in the real world when you are dealing with the public certain methods of vocalising such frustration don’t work and as far as I am concerned will not be tolerated.
As soon as someone starts to swear at me I shut down. We are done.
Find a better way to communicate people. Especially those of you in a suit! Do you talk to your clients like that? Your associates?
If you are such a professional, that you think you have the station to look down your nose at me, then may I kindly suggest you tidy yourselves up and use your “Big Boy/Girl” words…
Just saying…

I work as a server at Applebee’s part time. I got slammed on Thursday just when I started my shift at 4 pm. I got 12 tables of 3 to 5 people each in a 10 minute stretch. I informed the tables as they came in that I was the only server on the floor. Eventhough there are other employess in the building they are not clocked in, the were from the lunch shift. It was crazy and stressfull waiting on all these tables. People were rude and demanding and impatient. One table with two elderly people, a man and a woman, were very unhappy with me. When I went to check on them, she went off. You never came to see how we were doing, and he wanted another drink, you never ask…. She was loud and there was no reason to be so rude. I told her that I was sorry, and the I was the only person on the floor and was very busy and doing my best. She told me “I don’t want to hear your excuses, you piece of shit. Just do your job.”
I have never had someone that was a total stranger be so rude to me. I just told her “You are very rude.” I walked away, printed their check, dropped it off at the table. There was no way that I was ever going to go back to them, I didn’t care if they paid or not. All my tables heard her. They were all suddenly very nice to me. One table asked me how I could be so calm, and not responded in kind. I said that she had must have never worked with the public, and I wouldn’t give any real reason to complain about me. The old lady had the nerve to go to my Manager and demand that I get fire on the spot in front of her. So, turniphed….I feel for you.
I hear about this behavior all the time, but fortunately I’m not exposed to it. I’ve worked in the service industry but never has anyone been so outrageous or disrespectful.
It probably happens a lot, unfortunately…
