Sudan Out of the Dark Ages?

120407 1733 Sudanoutoft1It is with great relief that I read today that Gillian Gibbons is home. I invite you to read «I got more of an adventure than I bargained for…»

However, it has not at all appeased my anger, resentment or lessened my intolerance for intolerance, ignorance and hypocrisy.

I was impressed with the comments that were made by Eiain over at My Prozac Cocoon; while his comments were raw, blunt they were honest to his thoughts and feelings and I can only agree with where he is coming from.

I have become increasingly frustrated with the intolerance and having other's beliefs shoved down my throat at the expense of losing what my beliefs are and the values that not only I have, many of my fellow citizens have as well as what my country was built on.

Recently a female employee launched a discrimination suit against CATSA (Canadian Air Transportation Security Administration) based on the grounds that her uniform, that was already in place when she was hired and accepted the position, did not conform to Muslim Modesty guidelines.

Her union got involved and now a compromise has been reached where she is now working in an administrative position, able to wear «civilian clothes» which conform to her «modesty» guidelines thusly not having to wear the required uniform.

You can read the entire story on Reuters if you want more background on the story.

Here is where my ass has been chapped by this situation – and yes «ass chapped» is a professional term and perfectly acceptable to say.

She willingly accepted employment when it was offered knowing that she would be required to wear a uniform and what said uniform standards and pieces were.

If you do not want to wear the uniform, work the hours required or perform the training required for a position than simply do not accept the position. I urge you to either move on to find a position of employment that suits your needs.

On the other side of this coin; if members of the female sex are required in Saudi Arabia (for example) to follow Modesty laws when out in public in turn when you come here you need to respect the uniform/clothing guidelines of the company you work for.

Freedom of religion does not mean «what is good for the goose is not good for the gander». It is not a negotiation on what suits you and your lifestyle choices; it means you are free to practice your religion without infringing on others.

Even though there are numerous places in this world that I would love to visit and I have a career that would allow me the opportunity to visit, I have chosen to not go because said places do not share with me my values, ideals and thoughts. It is as simple as that.

I am not looking forward to a trip that I have to do for work that requires me to go to such a place, but because it is work, it is expected of me and I am a professional I will do what is required of me.

Reminds me of that episode of Grey's Anatomy in which the ambulance worker with the Swastika on his abdomen was operated on by 2 doctors of a visible minority. Those doctors did what was required of them. Sure my responsibilities are not at all close to this but they are my responsibilities.

«Don't talk to me while I am calling on Jesus» – that was the best line I have heard in a long time!
