Shoulder Update
I have been meaning to write up about what happened to my shoulder and why I am off work, for a while now but time seems to keep getting away from me, which is ironic because you would think that being off work I would have all this time on my hands, however, does not seem to be the case.
So okay, here we go. At the end of May we were returning home from a quick run to Fort Lauderdale and back, » 01 and on our descent into Toronto we hit some heavy unexpected turbulence.
I went flying » 02 into the wall and slammed my shoulder against the bulkhead. Tried to grab one of the handles on the bulkhead to stabilize myself and we were jarred in the opposite direction and all of me went flying except for that arm that was holding on to that handle.
Wrap that up to tear, crunch, twist and OUCH!
So I went the Doctor, he sent me for X-rays, they came back clear. I was hoping to get a copy of the X-ray to put up here like Moby did when he had his motorcycle accident.
With some of the tests on strength, mobility, range of motion etc. that my Doctor did he took me off work duties and I had to go on Worker’s Compensation.
I had been waiting and waiting and waiting to be able to get in for an Ultrasound, which finally happened yesterday. However, now I have to wait for the results to come in.
So what is going on with shoulder? Well I have limited range of motion without a doubt and I have lost some of the strength in my right arm from it. The other day I could not even lift the pot of boiling pasta off the stove.
A few times my arm has been so weak and the pain in my shoulder so INTENSE that I could not do my fly up when I took a leak. That was not a good situation to be in, you can’t really ask the dude at the urinal next to you at the mall to do your fly up for you. » 03
In the last week, my shoulder has started to lock/pop and crunch when I go to put my t-shirt on or reach for my coffee or beverage of choice so this points to a lack of improvement.
Figuring out what course of treatment is appropriate has been difficult because of the back log and the associated delays in getting the proper tests/imaging done has caused the duration of dealing with this to be extended.
I am and have been working hard to be careful with my arm during the day and use it as little as possible, however, the one thing that I am for sure not willing to give up is running every morning, I love it!
Yet by about 1.5km into my run, the pain is intense and feels like someone is taking a rusty railroad spike and stabbing it through my shoulder from front to back. Thankful for Ibuprofen here!
So that is where it is at, the Doctor has me listed as “not fit to return to work” for another 2 weeks, I go back next Thursday to discuss the results of the Ultrasound and then again on 03 August to see what progress has been made in healing.
I am kind of bored but been finding other stuff to do that has been keeping me really busy, and I am having fun with them, I would like to be getting outside more but the weather has been shit here. We have yet to have a “summer” it is much more like a long spring.
So there you have it, what has been going on with me…
Here Are the Foot Notes...
- which was not so quick a run because the FLL airport closed due to weather, we were diverted to West Palm Beach and had to sit out on the isolation tarmac surrounded by police for 2 hours ↩
- pardon the pun ↩
- or can you? ↩

Yes, dear, you certainly CAN ask the dude at the next urinal to help you with your fly....or anything else. Now, do you need me up there to rub your thing for you?? And your shoulder too?? I can't believe you've been withholding this information from me since MAY! Damn you.
I was not intending to KEEP the information from anyone really just could not figure out how to say it all...
I was wondering why you went quiet..Sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you are getting some kind of salary with Worker's Comp. And if Lewis is not available to help you zip up, (I'd rather help unzip), then feel free to call and I will be on the next fiight.
I am surprised you even offered to zip up...it goes without saying that you would rather UNZIP!
