Moscow Court Upholds Gay Pride Parade Ban

The Moscow City Court has rejected an appeal challenging the Tverskoy district court's ruling that banned a Moscow gay pride parade, Interfax news agency reported April 2.

One of the parade's organizers, Nikolay Alexeyev, says they plan to appeal to the Supreme Court, a ruling from which «is expected to be more objective,» Alexeyev says.

An organizing committee for a second gay pride parade, set for May 27, the day celebrating the 14th anniversary of the day criminal prosecution of gays was abolished in Russia, was set up in Moscow on March 19.

An application for permission to hold a gay pride parade will be submitted to the Moscow government two weeks before the event. The organizers claim that they will turn out for the march whether or not city authorities give consent.
