Homosexual Couples Legally Couple in San Fransisco

As of 1700 Pacific yesterday the state of California began issuing legal marriage licenses to same-sex couples allowing them to legally enter into a fully recognised marriage relationship.

For Californian gay men and lesbian women this now brings an end to a history of oppression, second class’person’ ship and now opens the door to be fully recognised as equal citizens.

I myself am not making any statements here about how I feel about marriage, because I am not in anywhere close to being in a position to think about it but I will tell you this…

If I had spent my life with someone I would want them taken care of if I were to pass, I would want them to be recognised as my partner for my benefits and after I had spent a number of years with them, I would trust, they would know what my thoughts and desires where if I was ever unable to make those decisions for myself.

Marriage now affords homosexuals in California this comfort and one of the basic human rights. » 01

Yes this sounds a little bit morbid yet I like to look at the whole picture, the biggest thing is equality.

Even here in Canada when we were fighting for equal rights, » 02 it bothered me to NO END when I heard the term "gay rights" or "special rights" that has NEVER EVER been the issue it has been about EQUAL RIGHTS.

And while I am touching on that – the connotations of the "gay lifestyle" and the "gay community" » 03 drive me right ’round the bend.

Anyway here are a few pictures I took from over at The Experience Project who was there today in San Fran…check out the rest here.

  1. 1) not only you, but in Loving v. Virginia the Supreme Court also called marriage a basic human right.
The fundies are doubly pissed, they worked so hard to brand us as super-sluts and here we are wanting to settle down and get married.
I think same-sex marriage will work out pretty well because we don’t have the gender roles to fight about, and there are a lot of g/l people that realize they don’t have to get married or that marriage simply isn’t for them.

The State of Connecticut where I live passed a civil union bill back in 05. My partner and I have made it as legal as it can be here, but hope that the case that is heading to the CT supreme court will turn out just as well as the CA.

  3. Yes and speaking as someone who has married and now has to divorce, I’m still in favour of gay marriage. But we have to be responsible enough to realize that you have to take the good with the bad.

But yeah. I’d like to get married again. Though I’m slowly becoming Elizabeth Taylor!
