Six months after Jerusalem police granted the Orthodox community a partial victory by changing the venue of a proposed WorldPride gay parade, activists are fighting another parade, scheduled for Thursday, June 21.

Last Sunday the Council of Yesha Rabbis published a letter calling the parade an «existential threat to the People of Israel» and urged action to stop the event.

However, Rabbi Yehuda Levin ‫ an American activist who is representing the Rabbinical Alliance of America, Agudas Harabbonim, and Jews for Morality ‫ claims rabbinic and political leaders could do more. «Imagine if five hundred politicians, rabbinic and religious leaders of the various faiths would lead tens of thousands of Jews, and lay down on the street to block this,» he said.

In the Knesset, two bills, one that would outlaw gay parades in all of Israel and another that would effectively grant Jerusalem’s local council the authority to cancel such parades, are currently being considered.

The bills are unlikely to go through the necessary three readings before next Thursday, and Rabbi Levin predicts that unless Orthodox Knesset members launch a concerted lobbying campaign, the measures will fail.

«The fight really is not just about a one time parade,» said Rabbi Levin. Noting the existence of several «Orthodox» gay organizations and the recent formation of a gay political party, Rabbi Levin called the parade part of a larger agenda. Rabbinical and lay leaders, he said, should «design a 365 day-a-year counteroffensive to preserve and promote our values.»
